Ed Sheeran admits ‘mistakes’ at first show since Macklemore controversy

Ed Sheeran has acknowledged making "mistakes" during his recent concert, which took place after Macklemore was removed from his tour for making pro-Palestinian remarks. The singer began his show in Philadelphia by addressing the controversy surrounding the tour, which led all support acts to leave. Sheeran described the 7 October 2023 Hamas-led attacks as "horrific" and called the situation in Gaza "unjustifiable".

He expressed his surprise at being involved in the debate about free speech and the complex political issue of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Sheeran stated that while he is often criticized for his music, this time the criticism was about a matter of significant importance, and he felt compelled to take difficult decisions, apologizing for his mistakes.

He reiterated his stance of not wanting to be a political commentator, as he aimed to create unity through his music and shows. The controversy began in early September when Macklemore performed a song dedicated to pro-Palestinian protesters, comparing the death toll in Gaza to a genocide, a claim Israel rejects. In response, Macklemore was dropped from the tour by his promoters, not Sheeran.

The controversy saw ticket prices drop and sales decline for the remaining US leg of Sheeran's Loop Tour. Despite the protest, the concert proceeded without major disruptions, with some fans expressing their appreciation for Sheeran's frank speech on the issue.
