Cops probe attacks on 2 Kuching convenience stores

Police are investigating two separate attacks on 24-hour convenience stores in Kuching, Malaysia, on Sunday night. According to Kuching police chief Alexson Naga Chabu, the first incident occurred at King Centre around 7:05pm, where firecrackers were thrown at a convenience store, causing no reported injuries. The second attack took place along Jalan Green later that night, when two masked men threw an object inside the store, resulting in two explosions and a fire that was extinguished by firefighters.

Initial investigations suggest that the perpetrators used similar methods for both attacks, wearing dark clothing and masks and throwing explosive or flammable materials into the stores. Police are reviewing CCTV footage, analyzing materials found at the scenes, and exploring whether the two incidents are linked. The motive remains under investigation, and the cases are being handled under Section 436 of the Penal Code, which covers mischief by fire or explosive substances with intent to destroy a building.

The police are also investigating claims that the convenience stores were selling online gambling "top-ups." If these allegations prove true, appropriate action will be taken, including the potential revocation of their business licenses by local authorities.
