Cops probe attacks on 2 Kuching convenience stores

Kuching police are investigating two attacks on 24-hour convenience stores that occurred on Sunday night. The first incident took place at King Centre around 7:05pm, where firecrackers were thrown at a store, causing no injuries or reported losses. The second attack occurred later that night along Jalan Green. According to police chief Alexson Naga Chabu, masked men wearing dark clothes were responsible for both attacks, throwing objects containing explosive or flammable materials into the stores.

The motive remains under investigation. Police are examining CCTV footage, analyzing recovered materials, and exploring whether the incidents are related. Preliminary findings suggest a similar method for both attacks. The perpetrators are believed to have used objects containing explosive or flammable substances with intent to damage the buildings.

The police are investigating the incidents under Section 436 of the Penal Code, which pertains to mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy a building. Additionally, authorities are looking into allegations that the convenience stores were involved in selling online gambling top-ups. If proven true, appropriate actions will be taken, including applying to local authorities to revoke the stores' business licenses.
