Cops probe attacks on 2 Kuching convenience stores

Kuching, Sept 21 — Two 24-hour convenience stores in the city were the victims of arson attacks on Sunday night, according to Kuching police. A statement from the chief, ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, revealed that the incidents happened between 7:05pm and 8:30pm. The first attack, which took place in the King Centre area, utilized firecrackers but caused no damage.

The second incident, however, saw two males enter a store on Jalan Green, throw an object inside, leading to two explosions and a fire. The fire was quickly extinguished by the Fire and Rescue Department.

Police are probing both incidents under Section 436 of the Penal Code, which pertains to mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy property. Convictions under this section can result in up to 20 years of imprisonment and a fine.

The police are actively seeking the suspects, examining the materials used, analyzing CCTV footage, and determining any possible connection between the two incidents. The motive behind the attacks remains under investigation. Preliminary findings suggest that the suspects had a similar approach: they were masked and dressed in dark clothing, entering the stores and throwing objects containing explosive or flammable materials.

The police are also looking into claims that the stores were selling online gambling 'top-ups' and may take legal action, including attempting to revoke the businesses' licenses. The public is cautioned against speculating, which could hinder the investigation.

Owners of nearby business premises are advised to strengthen their security and report any suspicious individuals or vehicles to the police immediately. Efforts are underway to identify those responsible for the attacks.
