Contemporary Istanbul expands international reach with 17 newcomers

The 21st edition of Contemporary Istanbul, set to take place from September 23 to 27, will attract more than 70 galleries from 24 countries to the restored Ottoman shipyard complex of Tersane Istanbul, overlooking the Golden Horn. Istanbul, positioned as a meeting point for collectors, curators, and galleries from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, has seen nearly a quarter of exhibitors participating in the fair for the first time.

This growth reflects Contemporary Istanbul's expanding international reach, with 17 newcomers joining the event, including galleries from Hong Kong, Paris, Beirut, and Lisbon. The fair's New Ground section will continue to spotlight emerging galleries and artists, with a strong local presence, and almost half of the participating galleries are based in Istanbul.

Established in 2018, Turkey has faced an economic crisis, with a weakening currency, persistently high inflation, political uncertainty, and conflicts in the wider region. The city's founder and chair, Ali Güreli, highlights the interconnectedness of Turkey's economic and political landscape with the region and the world, as well as the resilience of Turkey's cultural ecosystem.

To assist galleries in navigating these pressures, Contemporary Istanbul has introduced measures such as a bond agreement to reduce exhibitor expenses and a partnership with Turkish Airlines for transportation costs. Despite challenges, Güreli remains optimistic about Turkey's dynamic nature, rich artistic tradition, and growing cultural sector.

He emphasizes that Istanbul and the art fair provide a unique experience, bringing together the depth of human history, culture, and contemporary creativity in a way few cities worldwide can achieve.
