China expels generals accused of graft from Communist Party: state media

China expelled two high-ranking military officials from the ruling Communist Party on Monday, according to state media. The two men, Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli, were investigated last year for "serious violations of the law". Zhang Youxia, who held the position of senior vice chairman on the Central Military Commission (CMC), was the more senior of the two.

The defense ministry had previously stated that Zhang and Liu were suspected of "serious violations of discipline and the law", which is often used as a euphemism for corruption. This move fits into President Xi Jinping's ongoing anti-graft campaign, but Zhang's removal was particularly surprising given his high rank and close association with the leader.

State news agency Xinhua revealed details of their cases for the first time, stating that the allegations involved "exceptionally large sums of money". The investigation found that both men had "become disloyal to the Party... and crossed red lines" by engaging in various offenses, including forming illicit cliques and accepting large sums of money for personal gain.

They also allegedly used their positions to help others with job promotions, according to Xinhua. The expulsion of the two men is currently pending approval at a central Party committee plenary session. The decision underscores the government's stance that there is no place for corrupt individuals within the military.
