China’s Communist Party to hold top-level meeting in October

China's ruling Communist Party announced that its top-level meeting will take place in Beijing from October 26 to 29, according to state media on Monday. The fifth plenary session of the 20th Central Committee, an elite party body, will convene during this time, reported state news agency Xinhua. The specific dates were determined during a meeting of the 21-member Politburo, chaired by President Xi Jinping, who is the party general secretary.

These closed-door meetings, known as plenums, are held approximately once a year and typically reaffirm the party's key policy objectives. This particular meeting will mark the fifth time the committee has convened since its inception in 2022, following the 20th national party congress. It is also expected to be one of the last times the committee convenes before the next such congress in autumn 2027, where Xi Jinping is anticipated to secure a fourth term as leader.

The preceding gathering, held in October 2025, centered on the economy and China's 15th Five-Year Plan for development.
