China confirms Xi to visit US this week for Trump talks

China has confirmed that President Xi Jinping will be visiting the United States this week to meet with President Donald Trump for discussions on various matters. The visit is set to take place from Wednesday to Friday, with the two leaders holding an "in-depth exchange of views" on key issues related to China-US relations, global peace, and development.

During his stay, Xi will be welcomed by US President Trump at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday, after which they will hold meetings to discuss a wide range of topics. Trump, who had previously welcomed Xi during his state visit to China in May, stated that he planned to discuss "almost everything" with the Chinese president during his visit.

The visit comes amid ongoing tensions between the two countries, primarily driven by trade disputes, technological rivalry, and the issue of Taiwan. Despite a year-long tariff truce, both nations have yet to reach a comprehensive agreement. China's top negotiator for trade, Vice Premier He Lifeng, is currently in the US for meetings with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, focusing on creating a communication channel for concerns related to artificial intelligence.

Moreover, the US-China relationship is further complicated by Washington's ongoing war in Iran. China is wary of US sanctions against countries dealing with Tehran, even as it is believed to have supplied intelligence for a strike on US troops in the region.
