Brugada, Mamdani swap notes on housing, care systems at U20 mayors summit in New York

During the 2026 Urban 20 Mayors Summit in New York, Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani discussed housing and care systems. Mamdani praised Mexico City's public care system and community centers, saying they serve as an example for other cities to follow. Brugada aims to open 100 new community centers, known as Utopías, during her 2024-30 term to provide free childcare, services for seniors and people with disabilities, and cheap meals.

Mamdani also expressed willingness to collaborate with Mexico's leaders, such as President Claudia Sheinbaum, to tackle global crises. Brugada, inspired by New York, plans to replicate some of its practices in Mexico City to support delivery workers. She announced that the city will create spaces for these workers to rest and recharge.

During the U20 forum on affordable housing, Brugada pledged to join a global coalition for affordable housing, alongside cities like Barcelona and New York, to ensure everyone has access to decent and affordable housing.
