Trump says Mamdani has ‘great potential’ after Gracie Mansion visit

On a rare visit to Gracie Mansion, the New York mayor's official residence, US President Donald Trump met with Zohran Mamdani, the city's first Muslim mayor. The encounter, held on the Upper East Side, aimed to strengthen talks on a proposed new housing initiative. President Trump, currently in New York for the UN General Assembly, arrived by motorcade to conduct private discussions with Mamdani.

Throughout his political career, Trump has interacted with politicians from diverse backgrounds, describing his discussions with Mamdani as cordial. Housing emerged as a primary topic, with both leaders discussing plans to develop Sunnyside Yard in Queens and establish communication between housing and operations officials at City Hall and the White House. Mamdani highlighted potential for 12,000 homes, 30,000 jobs, and a new neighborhood, stating it could be the city's largest housing development since the early 1970s.

Trump warmly welcomed Mamdani, describing the visit as "a little bit of old home week for me" and praising Gracie Mansion as "a very, very representative place of New York." Despite past criticisms of each other's policies, the two men met cordially at the White House following Mamdani's election and again privately in February.

Trump also defended his administration's decision to restrict certain news organizations from the White House, stating they had an obligation to be fair. CNN, MSNBC, and Politico subsequently filed a lawsuit challenging these restrictions.
