Yoon Ji-hwan claimed a bronze medal in the men's 50-meter backstroke swimming event at the Asian Games, marking his first medal in his debut at the quadrennial competition. The 20-year-old achieved a time of 24.54 seconds at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre. Xu Jiayu of China secured the gold with a new Asian Games record time of 24.04 seconds, edging out fellow countryman Wang Zicheng by just 0.45 seconds. This marked the fourth swimming medal for South Korea at the current Asian Games.

Yoon swam in Lane 5 and posted a reaction time of 0.56 seconds, placing him in the middle of the pack in the 10-man race. With Xu leading the field, the race narrowed down to Wang and Yoon for the silver medal. Yoon expressed his dissatisfaction with his performance despite reaching the podium, stating, "I have been posting some really fast times since the national team trials last year, but I feel like I still have long ways to go."

He acknowledged that he had set personal records but felt he could have performed better, saying, "Overall, this was not a bad race. But I did not swim the way I am capable of, and I expected a lot more out of myself. I am disappointed with both my time and the color of this medal." Yoon hoped that this experience would motivate him to improve and reach the top of the podium in future competitions.
