Abgeordnetenhauswahl: Regierungswechsel in Berlin – Linke siegt klar vor der CDU

In Berlin's recent Abgeordnetenhauswahl, the Left (Linke) party emerged victorious with a record-breaking 25.7% of the vote, nearly doubling their 2023 performance of 12.2%. This success enables them to enter discussions on forming a new government, potentially with co-leadership by Elif Eralp, who could become Berlin's first female and Turkish-origin mayor.

Meanwhile, the CDU fell significantly, securing only 18.8%, with their party candidate Stefan Evers expressing willingness for talks with other parties to discuss handling the results. The AfD secured third place with 16.3% of the vote, while the Greens and SPD placed fourth and fifth, respectively, with 14.3% and 12.1% of the vote.

The Green Party's Nina Stahr sees the election as a sign for a progressive coalition, as the current black-red government was unseated. However, SPD Bundestag representative Michael Müller expressed concerns about the difficulties of forming a three-party coalition, citing the lack of experience among the Left parties. With the new government seemingly on the horizon, Berlin voters turned out in record numbers, with a 74.2% turnout, up from 63% in the previous election.
