Zelensky, Trump to meet in New York in talks that ‘could change a lot’

President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump are set to meet in New York, according to Zelensky, who spoke after a phone conversation between the two leaders on September 20th. Zelensky described the call as "important" and noted that they discussed many key issues, expressing optimism about the potential impact of their meeting.

He also acknowledged the significant value of the recent visit to Kyiv by U.S. officials Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, stating that it provided them with firsthand insight into the situation in Ukraine. The agenda for their New York meeting encompasses critical topics such as de-escalation measures and fundamental security concerns, including energy, food, and the protection of lives.

Zelensky emphasized that peace remains their top priority and expressed readiness to take decisive actions with the American team. Additionally, Zelensky congratulated Trump on signing the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, which strengthens sanctions on Russia and imposes substantial tariffs on Russian energy imports.

The signing ceremony took place on September 18th, and the law mandates duties of up to 500% on specific goods originating from Russia. Zelensky reiterated the shared goal of achieving peace amid Europe's intensified diplomatic efforts to bring an end to Russia's ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
