Mamdani, a democratic socialist who defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary and then won the general election in November, has often been a recurring political adversary for Republicans. However, Trump has maintained a warm relationship with Mamdani, even describing the young mayor as someone who "surprises some conservative people."

The two met for the first time after Mamdani's election at the White House, where Trump reportedly expressed optimism about Mamdani's potential to "surprise some conservative people." In a February meeting, Mamdani gifted Trump a mock New York Daily News front page with the headline "Trump to City: Let's Build," referencing a famous 1975 headline "Ford to City: Drop Dead" that referred to President Gerald Ford's veto of federal assistance to New York City.

Mamdani's team explained that the mock front page was intended to demonstrate the potential positive reaction and support for new federal investments in housing within the city.
