You couldn’t make it up: Manchester Airport runway pothole leaves passengers stranded

Manchester Airport faced a unique challenge on Saturday, September 19, when a pothole on its main runway caused significant disruption for travelers. The runway, identified as 05L/23R, was affected for approximately two hours, leading to delays, diversions, and unexpected changes in destinations for several flights. Three flights bound for Manchester were redirected to Liverpool, specifically XQ592 from Antalya, LS884 from Pisa, and LS802 from Rhodes.

Additionally, a flight from Istanbul was diverted to Stansted due to the closure. Inrix reported that overall flight delays at both arriving and departing from Manchester averaged around 50 minutes. Travelers were urged to verify their flight status prior to reaching the airport. Manchester Airport eventually reopened the runway, but subsequent delays persisted into the evening.

Notably, Prime Minister Andy Burnham had recently addressed potholes as a political issue, stating that if politics could not resolve such basic problems, there was a significant problem. Burnham made this remark during the Great North Investment Summit in May, when he was Mayor of Greater Manchester. In contrast to his earlier statement, the airport spokesperson explained the runway closure as a result of routine maintenance, a claim that seems unlikely given Manchester Airport's typical practice of publishing planned closures in advance.

The airport's main runway is operational 24/7 and requires regular maintenance due to its heavy usage. This peculiar situation has raised questions about the airport's handling of routine maintenance and its apparent lack of preparation for such unexpected issues.
