NATO Ready for Any Russian Escalation, Military Chief Says

NATO’s Military Committee Chair Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone declared the alliance fully prepared to respond to any Russian military escalation along the eastern border. Speaking to Politico, Dragone stated that the alliance’s structure, troops, and weaponry are all in a state of readiness. He elaborated that NATO is broadening its operational capabilities across the eastern periphery, with a focus on boosting troop levels and equipment preparedness.

While the Copenhagen summit did not center on recent warnings from individual member states, Dragone stressed that NATO has extensive operational plans to safeguard every inch of allied territory. These plans, consisting of around 4,000 pages of classified regional defense strategies, include response protocols for a range of scenarios, from local border disputes to large-scale military invasions.

The comprehensive defense frameworks were built upon three regional plans formally endorsed by NATO leaders at the 2023 Vilnius summit. They outline the allocation of forces, defensive sectors, and rapid reinforcement pathways across the continent. Dragone emphasized that NATO remains prepared for any escalation, underlining that Russia’s recent actions have actually bolstered allied resolve rather than weakening unity.

He noted that the Kremlin’s coercive measures have had the opposite of their intended effect, solidifying allies’ determination instead of fracturing collective defense. The recent plans represent NATO’s most extensive revision of collective defense strategies since the Cold War, moving from rotational reassurance missions to pre-assigned combat formations capable of engaging in intense defense from the outset of conflict.

The 4,000-page blueprint divides the European theater into three zones—High North and Atlantic, central Europe and the Baltic corridor, and the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions—integrating national defense forces under unified allied command. NATO officials highlighted that the plans include automated response mechanisms for commanders to adjust readiness levels swiftly if Russian forces approach allied borders.

However, contrasting assessments from frontline European officials raise concerns about NATO’s collective air defense capabilities. Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs warned that many NATO members would struggle to intercept a large Russian missile attack if the conflict spreads beyond Ukraine. Rinkēvičs highlighted the rapid advancements in aerial warfare and unmanned systems, warning that Western procurement cycles and defensive preparations risk becoming outdated by mid-2027.

He pointed out significant delays in acquiring Patriot batteries and surface-to-air interceptors, exacerbated by the depletion of American stockpiles during the Iran conflict. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk conveyed similar concerns to his parliament, stating that intelligence suggests Russia is plotting hybrid drone and missile incidents in eastern Europe to portray NATO’s Article 5 mutual defense guarantee as “more theoretical than practical.”
