According to City Council member Mike Siegel, the incident began when the ICE officer first rammed the man's vehicle. The agent then exited his service vehicle and fired at least five shots. The man was taken to a hospital for treatment; his condition was unknown at the time.

The vehicle sustained damage to the passenger side door, with bullet holes reportedly seen nearby. Local media reported seeing at least two bullet holes. A large number of emergency personnel and spectators were present at the scene. The mayor and police have since commented on the incident. The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, did not respond to requests for more details following the event.

President Donald Trump had announced plans for an "AI Force" to monitor artificial intelligence (AI) earlier in the week. Trump announced on Truth Social that he planned to appoint an AI official in the near future, stating that the growth of the AI industry should not be hindered. The government would value, support, and oversee the technology, while also addressing misuse in a manner easily regulated by existing criminal and civil law.

The White House initially remained silent on the plans. Just a week prior, Trump had claimed an "ill-said conspiracy" against AI and data centers, rejecting calls for new federal AI regulations and emphasizing that the US only needed a strong president for oversight. US representatives plan to discuss AI at an upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
