Bago vows probe into deaths of 37 in NSCDC custody, says findings will be made public

Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has committed to a thorough investigation into the deaths of 37 individuals in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, according to officials. The investigation aims to determine the causes and circumstances surrounding the detainees' deaths. Speaking during a three-day Fida’a prayer at Tunga Central Mosque on Sunday, Bago assured the victims' families that the findings of the probe would be made public.

Bago revealed that preliminary data indicated some individuals were already detained prior to the arrival of newly arrested illegal miners. He emphasized that the investigation will establish the identities and ages of all those who died, as well as identify anyone who was detained before the miners arrived. The governor further mentioned that the probe would involve mining stakeholders in addressing activities in the affected areas.

Bago also announced that the government will provide assistance and support to the families of the deceased and survivors receiving treatment in hospitals. The Emir of Minna would oversee the distribution of the assistance. The governor appealed for residents of Minna and other Niger State residents to remain calm, avoid violence following the incident, and lift the curfew imposed after the unrest.
