Ukraine targets Moscow in ‘largest ever’ drone attack on city

On Sunday, Ukrainian forces launched over 1,000 drones at Russia, with hundreds targeting Moscow, according to officials following the last day of Russia's parliamentary elections. Moscow's mayor claimed this represented the largest attack on the Russian capital, with damage to an oil refinery and residential building. Two people died and 20 were injured in the attack, including a 74-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman in the Moscow region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy detailed the attack, mentioning the use of domestically made Flamingo and Pelican missiles against vital oil and logistics facilities. The financial pressure Kyiv hopes to exert on Russia's economy is significant, he stated. Meanwhile, Russia continued its attacks, with a drone strike killing a clergy member and wounding four others in a monastery in Ukraine's Kherson region on Saturday.

In Kyiv, another child and their mother were killed, and another child died in the hospital on Sunday. The U.S. State Department approved a potential $2.68 billion sale of air defense equipment to Ukraine. Russia held its parliamentary elections, which saw little opposition to President Vladimir Putin's policies, and is expected to solidify the Kremlin's control.

Russia also held elections in the four Ukrainian regions it annexed, along with Crimea. Moscow's Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that 450 drones were destroyed en route to Moscow, damaging the Moscow Oil Refinery and a residential building. The attack was seen as an attempt to disrupt the elections, but Putin has shown no intention to end the invasion.

As the fighting along the 1,250-kilometer front line has slowed, Russia and Ukraine are now engaged in an escalating duel of long-range aerial strikes.
