Trump says Washington Arch to become military complex housing drones, snipers

President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that the arch he plans to construct near Arlington National Cemetery in Washington would also function as a "military complex". This complex would house drones, snipers, and store significant amounts of ammunition, according to a Reuters report. Trump attributed this move to national security concerns, similar to the reasoning behind the $400 million ballroom complex being developed on the site of the White House's former East Wing.

The projects are part of Trump's broader initiative to alter Washington, which also involves adding his name to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Trump claimed he agreed to this transformation at the military's strong request. Critics, including preservationists, argue the plans could damage historic landmarks.

Trump stated the arch would be converted into a top-tier military complex, capable of rapidly deploying drones and snipers from both its roof and plaza areas, and storing substantial amounts of sniper ammunition. Former Marine Colonel Mark Cancian stated the move seemed to aim at countering opposition to the arch, situated near Arlington National Cemetery, Fort Myer, and the Pentagon.

He questioned the necessity of this addition, noting the proximity of an existing military facility. A judge ordered the administration to provide 48-hour notice before any activity at the site, despite legal challenges and the lack of final approval. The FAA cleared the arch for aviation, but safety concerns were raised by aviation experts and veterans, who sued to halt the project, claiming it would destroy an historic sightline.
