How to Survive Alone in the Pacific for More Than a Year: The Amazing Journey of Salvador Alvarenga

José Salvador Alvarenga, a Mexican fisherman, found himself alone in the Pacific Ocean for an astonishing 438 days after a violent storm left him and his boat companion, Ezequiel Córdoba, drifting in the water. The pair were lost for hours without navigation equipment and were forced to rely on their small boat and the elements for survival. Unfortunately, Córdoba died about four weeks into the ordeal, leaving Alvarenga to face the harsh conditions and isolation alone.

Alvarenga used the moon’s phases to keep track of time as he couldn’t rely on a calendar. He caught fish, birds, and even sea turtles to survive, collecting rainwater for hydration. His physical condition deteriorated drastically due to severe dehydration, malnutrition, anemia, and swelling, but he persisted. After 438 days, Alvarenga’s battered boat finally reached the shores of Tile Islet in the Marshall Islands, where he was discovered by Emi Libokmeto and Russel Laikidrik.

Despite the incredulity of his survival story, Alvarenga’s boat, filled with turtle shells and bird remains, matched the missing vessel. Official records supported his account, and a search-and-rescue mission had been launched but later called off. Alvarenga’s survival echoed a similar case from 2006, showing that small boats can be carried across vast distances by Pacific currents.

After his rescue, Alvarenga returned home to El Salvador and later traveled to Mexico to meet Córdoba’s family, as promised during their last moments together. Despite the trauma of his experience, Alvarenga turned his ordeal into a testament to human resilience.
