Troubled Marseille lose fifth straight as PSG win

Olympique de Marseille suffered their fifth straight defeat in the Ligue 1, losing 2-1 to champions Paris St Germain on Sunday. Marquinhos was the hero for PSG, scoring the winning goal in the 74th minute to condemn the hosts to the relegation zone. The English international had initially seen his touch from Nuno Mendes' cross thwarted before capitalizing on the rebound.

PSG had taken the lead just seven minutes earlier when Ferran Torres, playing off the bench, headed home Desire Doue's cross. The Spanish forward has now scored seven goals since joining from Barcelona.

Marseille equalized in the 72nd minute through Angel Gomes, a substitute played in by Amine Gouiri's pass. However, the equalizer was quickly extinguished when Marquinhos sealed the win for PSG. The match saw Marseille skipper Timothy Weah sent off for a second bookable offence. The loss leaves Marseille languishing second from bottom in the Ligue 1 standings, having lost four consecutive league games and suffering a 4-1 defeat at Besiktas in the Europa League last Thursday.

Despite the loss, Marseille had several chances, with Neil Maupay missing two clear opportunities. The match saw an even first half, but PSG accelerated after the break, running out deserved winners and moving up to sixth place after a slow start to the season. Earlier in the day, struggling Nice secured their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Lille, moving off the bottom of the table in their first home win in almost 12 months.
