KP CM Afridi blames deteriorating security situation on ‘failed’ foreign policy

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi declared on Saturday that the deteriorating security scenario in the nation stemmed from a failed foreign policy persisting for the last 22 years. During a visit to Kohat, he urged for a change in policy when it fails to yield results. The CM paid tribute to police, counter-terrorism department, Special Branch, Rescue 1122, doctors, district administration, and individuals of Kohat for their bravery and resilience.

He expressed condolences to the families of the slain police personnel and civilians during the terrorist attack on the Police Lines. Afridi highlighted the commendable manner in which security personnel and responders faced terrorists during a nearly 20-hour operation. He emphasized that the police personnel and civilians who lost their lives while confronting terrorists made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation's protection.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been engaged in a continuous battle against terrorism since 2004, resulting in over 80,000 lives lost over the past 22 years. He expressed concern over the negative consequences of the newly established Afghan government welcomed by Pakistani rulers, which have disrupted trade, closed the border, and led to a halt in economic activities in tribal districts, causing a rise in terrorism.

The Afghan border closure led to economic losses of more than Rs8 billion for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the previous fiscal year, potentially causing further losses this year. Afridi stated that despite the sacrifices made by the people and police, they are still perceived negatively, which is deeply regrettable. He criticized the federal government and institutions for suppressing the Political Party, the PTI, and focusing on matters other than terrorism.

Afridi urged the youth, people, and police of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to stand up for themselves, their province, and the country, as no one else would come to their aid. He announced financial assistance for the families of martyrs who did not fall under the government's Shuhada Package, and modern medical equipment would be added to District Headquarters Hospital in Kohat.

Revamping of DHQ hospitals and providing modern equipment would also be carried out across the province. Afridi announced the establishment of a police station for the Special Branch in Kohat, and the project would be completed as soon as possible. The chief minister also addressed the shortage of police personnel and said that it would be addressed in the cabinet for necessary decisions.
