Japan emperor declares Asian Games open following turbulent build-up

The 20th Asian Games were officially opened by Japan's Emperor Naruhito on Saturday, September 19, 2026, in Nagoya, following a challenging period leading up to the event. The multi-sport competition, which featured over 11,000 athletes and 6,000 officials, surpassed the size of the Olympics. The opening ceremony took place at a 30,000-capacity stadium, with a subdued crowd witnessing a vibrant display on a heart-shaped stage.

Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako received a respectful welcome as they sat alongside International Olympic Committee president Kirsty Coventry. The first gold medal is expected to be earned on Sunday, likely in the men's individual triathlon, as athletes compete in more than 40 sports until October 4. Nagoya and Aichi prefecture are also in the running for the 2028 Olympics.

The Games have faced numerous challenges, including inadequate seating, typhoon threats, and a lack of a traditional athletes' village. Competitors are staying in temporary huts, cruise ships, and hotels, with some reporting poor conditions. Despite these issues, the Olympic Council of Asia praised Japan for handling the event well, given the recent delay of the Tokyo Olympics due to COVID-19.
