Asian Games open in Nagoya with glitzy ceremony after troubled buildup

The 20th Asian Games commenced in Nagoya, Japan on Saturday with a dazzling ceremony featuring dance, fireworks, and a parade of nations, following an opening marked by operational hiccups and logistical issues. Emperor Naruhito inaugurated the Games after witnessing the 45 nations and regions parade at a diplomatic table alongside International Olympic Committee chief Kirsty Coventry. Accompanied by a robust security presence, organizers anticipated deploying up to 10,000 police for the ceremony.

Despite the troubled start, Olympic Council of Asia President Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani emphasized the unifying power of sport, stating that the athletes serve as a beacon of peace, understanding, and friendship among nations. Japan's father-son duo, Shigenobu Murofushi and Koji Murofushi, who have both won Asian Games hammer throw titles, jointly ignited the cauldron following a torch relay.

Organizers opted against constructing a dedicated Games village, instead accommodating athletes and officials in a combination of hotel rooms, temporary wooden structures, and a docked cruise ship as a cost-saving measure. Several national teams, including Japan's, lodged complaints about subpar accommodations, with South Korea expressing dissatisfaction with cramped basketballer containers at Garden Pier.

India's cricket board ensured the men's cricket team an alternative hotel due to bed allocation constraints from organizers.

While acknowledging the initial setbacks, the Olympic Council of Asia downplayed the issues as "teething difficulties." The opening spectacle began modestly, with classical music, dance on a heart-shaped stage, and a parade that included a delegation from North Korea. The ceremony later intensified, incorporating dancers in boiler suits representing Nagoya's manufacturing legacy and a grand fireworks finale.

The event's theme, "Harmonic Heart Beat," aimed to symbolize Asian unity amid geopolitical tensions and historical disputes. However, the Games have already faced setbacks, with Taiwan's delegation initially refusing to participate in their welcoming ceremony due to a blocked sports minister, and South Korea's men's hockey team protesting the playing of North Korea's national anthem before a match.

Despite ongoing competitions in basketball, soccer, and other sports, the first gold medal will be awarded on Sunday, most likely in the triathlon.
