Fire Dept: SAR launched after hiker slips down slope and becomes separated from group in Gua Musang

Kota Bharu, September 20 — In an effort to find a missing hiker, the Kelantan Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) initiated a Search and Rescue (SAR) operation in the jungles near Kem Tudung Periuk, Gua Musang, on the night of September 20. The individual at the center of the search was Muhammad Asrul Quyyum Asmmuddin, a 23-year-old man.

Mr. Asrul is believed to have fallen from the hiking trail and slid down a slope, but he did not suffer any severe injuries and is able to walk. A JBPM spokesperson revealed that despite having poor phone coverage in the region, the Operations Control Centre (PGO) made contact with the victim. The hiker had managed to share his location via WhatsApp.

The spokesperson stated that the hiker, who possessed a torchlight, a whistle, and a smartphone with around 75% battery life, was instructed to remain at his current location while he awaited the arrival of the SAR team. He was further advised to save his battery and torch light. The victim was also taught to blow his whistle at regular intervals, then stop to listen for a response.

If he hears a response, he should identify the direction of the sound before moving. The hiker was asked to inform the Kelantan PGO if he is found by any SAR team. The search operation began at 8:08 PM after JBPM received a call about the incident. The Gua Musang Fire and Rescue Station dispatched a Fire Rescue Tender and a Hilux vehicle to reach the location, which is 116 kilometers from their station. The search continues.
