Fast food from US, China gains popularity in both countries

Despite political tensions between the United States and China, one area where the two nations share a common interest is fast food. Chinese restaurant and beverage chains have been rapidly expanding in the U.S., while American chains are venturing into China. This mutual expansion can be seen as a form of gastrodiplomacy, as noted by Yaling Jiang, founder of ApertureChina.

In China, American fast-food chains like Popeyes and Five Guys are viewed as indulgent treats, while Chinese brands like KFC are gaining popularity among Americans due to evolving tastes. The White House has not disclosed the menu for President Trump's state dinner with President Xi Jinping, but both leaders may share a fondness for cheap, crowd-pleasing meals.

Xi Jinping's 2013 visit to a steamed-bun restaurant in Beijing, where he ordered a modest meal, highlights the shared appreciation for fast food. On the other hand, U.S. fast-food chains have adapted their menus to cater to Chinese tastes. KFC, for example, offers french fries and chicken alongside traditional Chinese desserts like custardy egg tarts and congee.

As of 2023, over 53,000 Mixue locations have been established in the U.S., reflecting a similar trend. At least nine Chinese chains have also entered the U.S. market since 2023, mostly focusing on beverages and snacks. Both sides are eager to capitalize on the popularity of fast food, despite their political differences.
