Fast food from the US and China catches on in both countries

The United States and China, despite their numerous disagreements, share a common interest in fast food. American restaurant chains are rapidly expanding in China, driven by the potential customer base in a market four times larger than the United States. Meanwhile, Chinese chains are entering the U.S. market, with some finding success in smaller, inland cities.

The cultural exchange through food is referred to as gastrodiplomacy, according to Yaling Jiang, the founder of ApertureChina. In China, American fast-food chains like Popeyes and Five Guys are seen as enjoyable treats, while Chinese brands are considered unofficial ambassadors to the U.S. for Americans with more diverse palates.

President Trump's love for fast food may be a shared interest between the two leaders when they host a state dinner on Thursday. Chinese President Xi Jinping made a rare public visit to a steamed-bun restaurant in Beijing in 2013, ordering a modest meal. U.S. President Donald Trump, on the other hand, is known for his fondness of fast food, having even manned a fry station at a McDonald's during his 2024 campaign.

Chinese restaurant chains, such as KFC, have established a strong presence in the U.S. KFC is the largest American fast-food chain in China, with over 13,000 restaurants. Many American chains rely on Chinese partners to find suitable locations and share financial risks. Some Chinese fast-food chains, like Mixue, are also expanding into the U.S. market, with plans to open more locations in various states.
