European commissioner discusses EU-Israel relationship, Gaza with Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar

European Commissioner Dubravka Suica and Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa ar engaged in a discussion on EU-Israel relations, regional stability, and Gaza recovery efforts on Sunday, as reported by the commissioner in a subsequent X/Twitter post. The conversation centered on the EU's interest in security and stability throughout the Middle East, with a particular focus on a reformed and functional Palestinian Authority.

Suica emphasized the urgency of advancing early recovery efforts in Gaza, prior to the United Nations General Assembly meeting. She highlighted the importance of continued cooperation to facilitate the implementation of early recovery projects on the ground. In July, the EU, along with other allies, launched an initiative to fund Gaza's early recovery, focusing on restoring essential social and economic services, rehabilitating critical infrastructure, and strengthening governance.

The EU has expressed criticism of Israel's conduct during the Gaza war, while simultaneously defending Israel's right to self-defense. Additionally, the EU has taken issue with Israel's expansion of settlements in the West Bank, viewing such actions as a hindrance to Israeli-Palestinian peace and the creation of a Palestinian state.

Divided opinions exist within the EU, with some member states expressing strong criticism of Israel and others maintaining closer relations. In June, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa ar announced the severance of all contact with EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas due to her alleged comparison of Israel to apartheid-era South Africa.
