‘Easier to write fiction at the moment’: Journalist Tavleen Singh on her debut novel

Indian journalist and columnist Tavleen Singh has transitioned from non-fiction to political fiction, with her debut novel "The Actor." The novel envisions a future India on the brink of extreme religious fervor, with a larger-than-life Prime Minister who is an untouchable figure. The story features a Bollywood actor named Amit Singh, who becomes politically active after a series of box office failures.

Singh's work highlights the growing divide between Hindu and Muslim communities, as well as the rise of radicalization fueled by language and politics. She warns that if the current trajectory continues, India could become a dystopian version of itself in just a decade. The novel's protagonist, Naresh Khanna, is based on a real political strategist named Prashant Kishor, while other characters draw inspiration from Singh's acquaintances in Lutyens' Delhi.

The story also features a political reporter-turned-lover, Maya, and a corrupt maharani-politician. Singh expresses optimism about the possibility of reform, but acknowledges the potential consequences for those who challenge the ruling establishment.
