(Asiad) Pentathlete Seong Seung-min refuses to rest on her laurels

South Korean pentathlete Seong Seung-min has recently rewritten history in the modern pentathlon, shattering records and setting new benchmarks. Having claimed the gold medal in the women's individual event at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, she achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first South Korean female pentathlete to win an individual title, thereby putting an end to China's four-decade-long dominance in the gold medal count.

Her prowess was not limited to the Asian Games; she went on to clinch the top spot at the 2024 World Modern Pentathlon Championships, thus becoming the first Asian female pentathlete to win a world title. Her triumph reached the height of Olympic glory during the Paris Summer Olympics, where she became the first Asian woman to secure an Olympic medal in the sport.

Reflecting on her victory, Seong expressed her elation, stating that earning the first title at the Olympics meant everything to her. She noted that apart from two years' lapse since the Paris Olympics, almost everything remained the same, but the newfound composure had a significant impact on her performance. Despite facing challenges with the newly introduced obstacle course racing event, Seong managed to maintain her composure and stayed atop the leaderboard throughout the final, thanks to strong performances in each of the five events - fencing, swimming, obstacle course racing, and laser run.

Her consistent excellence in each event led her to achieve an overall score of 1,492 points, marking her as a force to be reckoned with in the modern pentathlon arena.
