Denmark says Greenland sovereignty safe under Trump’s deal

COPENHAGEN - Denmark has announced that its sovereignty over Greenland will remain intact despite an agreement with the Trump administration to expand the US military presence in the Arctic island. While the specifics of the deal, including the scale of the military buildup and the extent of authority ceded to Washington, remain undisclosed, Denmark and Greenland expressed their hope that the agreement, to be signed during the UN General Assembly next week, would resolve months of uncertainty caused by President Trump's threats to take control of the territory.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen assured his citizens that the agreement would uphold Greenland's right to self-determination and the Danish kingdom's sovereignty. Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen emphasized that the deal acknowledges the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom and the people's self-determination rights.

However, political science professor Mikkel Vedby Rasmussen from the University of Copenhagen cautioned that if Denmark cedes formal authority to Washington, it might signal a shift from the colonial relationship with Denmark to one with the US. Trump's announcement followed reports that the US and Denmark were nearing a deal, which was seen as a way to defuse tensions and strengthen security in the Arctic and North Atlantic regions.
