Dengue cases in Tamil Nadu decline for third consecutive year as per government data

Tamil Nadu's dengue cases have dropped for the third year in a row, according to the State Health and Family Welfare Department's latest statistics. As of September 19, 2026, the state recorded 17,049 cases, a sharp decrease from 25,585 cases in 2025, 46,971 cases in 2024, and 56,863 cases in 2023. The number of reported dengue cases fell by 17% between 2023 and 2024, followed by an even more significant 46% decline in 2025.

However, it is important to note that the 2026 figure only covers the period up to September 19, and thus cannot be directly compared with the full-year figures of previous years. The data indicate a consistent decrease in reported dengue cases, although the exact figures for 2026 may change as the year progresses.

Despite this positive trend, nine dengue-related deaths were reported in Tamil Nadu up to September 19, 2026, compared to 12 deaths in 2025, 13 in 2024, and 12 in 2023. Dengue, a mosquito-borne viral infection, can lead to high fever, body pain, and in severe cases, life-threatening complications such as persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, and extreme weakness. Immediate medical attention is crucial in such instances.

While the year-on-year decline in reported cases and deaths offers insight into the state's dengue burden, it is essential to recognize that the data does not provide reasons for the observed decline. Continued surveillance and control measures against the Aedes mosquito, which transmits dengue, remain crucial for prevention efforts.
