Colorado State fans shouted offensive chant directed at BYU before football game against Cougars

At Colorado State University's Canvas Stadium, prior to a football matchup against Brigham Young University on September 19, 2026, Colorado State supporters engaged in a vulgar chant aimed at the Latter-day Saints, an organization associated with BYU. The chant, consisting of offensive language directed at Mormons, was captured on video and disseminated across social media platforms.

This chant of religious slurs has been increasingly prevalent at various BYU athletic events in recent years. In response to such behavior, USC (2021), Oregon (2022), Providence (2024), and Cincinnati (2025) have all expressed regret through apologies. In 2025, Colorado faced a public reprimand and a $50,000 fine from the Big 12 conference for similar chants from Buffaloes fans.

Earlier this year, Oklahoma State also faced the same penalty after such chants occurred during a basketball game against BYU. Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark has emphasized the need for education regarding student-athletes' behavior, stating that the student sections are where these chants originate. As a Jewish individual who grew up in a diverse environment and experienced personal instances of hate, Yormark takes this matter seriously and is committed to fostering change and modifying such behavior.
