Tennessee quarterback Faizon Brandon showcased maturity during his third collegiate start, committing to strong ball security despite minor fumble mishaps. Leading the offense in their final nonconference game preceding a matchup against No. 1 Texas, he orchestrated seven scoring drives as the No. 14 Vols (3-0) secured a 42-9 victory over Kennesaw State (1-2) at Neyland Stadium on September 19th.

Heupel, Tennessee's coach, praised Brandon for effectively utilizing open windows and capitalizing on opportunities. Brandon achieved 178 passing yards and a touchdown on 18 of 26 passes, while contributing 47 rushing yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. He also faced his first turnover, a fumble on a strip sack that Kennesaw State recovered. Fortunately, Tennessee's defensive end Tyree Weathersby swiftly pounced on the fumble following a botched handoff during Kennesaw State's ensuing drive.

Brandon experienced his second turnover of the game in the fourth quarter, a fumble during a scramble, but it was recovered by offensive tackle Ory Williams.
