Martin recovers from early setback to win Austrian sprint and retake championship lead

Aprilia rider Jorge Martin staged an incredible comeback from a chaotic opening-lap clash with championship rival Marc Marquez to win the Austrian Grand Prix sprint on Saturday and take the MotoGP championship lead. The 28-year-old Martin, who had secured pole position earlier in the day, outpaced Marquez to claim his 20th sprint victory after KTM's Pedro Acosta crashed out while leading in the final stages.

Martin's race seemed to unravel in the initial corners when he was forced to react defensively to Marquez, ended up in eighth, while Acosta took the lead and built a near three-second advantage before crashing out with about three laps left at KTM's home circuit. Martin, however, fought his way back through the field to secure a remarkable victory.

The Spanish rider expressed his delight, acknowledging that he was fortunate to have Acosta's mistake helping him regain the lead. Marquez had claimed the championship lead for the first time this season after winning the previous weekend's turbulent San Marino Grand Prix, equaling Martin's point total but moving ahead due to his more successful season thus far.

Today, Martin's goal was to finish in third place in the sprint, as he recognized the superior pace of Acosta and himself during the practice sessions. He expressed his gratitude to his team, hoping they could maintain their current momentum into the upcoming Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg. Marquez secured third place on the podium, with Trackhouse Aprilia's Ai Ogura in fourth and Alex Marquez fifth.
