Chinese nationals robbed of Sh3.9 million after suspects pose as police in Nyamira

Two Chinese nationals and their Kenyan driver lost Sh3.9 million after criminals disguised as police officers intercepted their vehicle on the Nairobi-Keroka road in Nyamira County. The robbery took place on Saturday, September 19, 2026. The victims were en route to Mekenene when a Toyota Probox, adorned with wedding-like flowers, pulled up alongside their blue BMW.

The Probox allegedly forced the victims' car to halt. Two men exited the Probox, carrying walkie-talkies. The driver stopped, mistaking the men for police officers. The assailants then assaulted the occupants before stealing Sh3.9 million in cash, a Huawei phone valued at Sh50,000, personal items worth Sh200,000, and confidential company documents.

The victims also lost their identification cards and other credentials during the heist. Police have initiated investigations and alerted other stations to the suspects' vehicle, requesting officers to be vigilant and take action if the suspects are identified or apprehended. Police believe this incident may have been an inside job.

A dedicated task force has been assembled to investigate the matter further. The team questioned the victims as part of their probe into the incident. Authorities have observed a slight increase in such robberies, where criminals target victims after they leave banks. Other victims are often robbed of cash left in their cars. Police are actively pursuing the gangs responsible for this trend.
