Boan Venter brings bulk, a bit of beef’ to Lions' cause ahead of United Rugby Championship

Ivan van Rooyen, coach of the Lions, is thrilled to have bolstered his squad with two significant additions. Boan Venter, a formidable loosehead prop, and Ethan Adams, a young and explosive inside centre, have both proven their worth. Venter's presence is particularly valuable for the Lions, who have been searching for a strong loosehead prop capable of making an impact in the loose.

Venter, a Springbok prop, joined the Lions after returning to South Africa to be closer to his family. Boan, the son of former Griquas great De Waal Venter, captained Griquas at Craven Week level and has earned 10 Springbok caps, making his Lions debut against the All Blacks. Van Rooyen describes Venter as "big, 1.87m, 130kg loosehead," praising his "bulk, a bit of beef," and noting his "hardkoppig" playing style, which combines physicality and excitement.

Amidst Venter's experience, Ethan Adams injects an exciting young energy into the Lions. The 19-year-old Grey College product is a powerful presence at inside centre, having scored several tries for the Lions during the Currie Cup. Van Rooyen is especially pleased with Adams' arrival after the Lions faced setbacks due to injuries at No 12 last season.

With Richard Kriel injured at the start of the season and Bronson facing another injury, Ethan's arrival offers much-needed momentum. Van Rooyen highlights Ethan's physicality and his potential to bring a different skill set to the team, as he can play both 12 and 13 positions.
