Where Are Colombian Migrants Headed After Crossing the U.S. Border?

Colombian migrants arriving at the U.S. border are primarily seeking economic opportunities, cheaper rent, and a strong Spanish-speaking community in their new destinations. Federal records reveal Aurora, a Denver suburb, as a key destination for many Colombians. Queens, New York City's borough, attracts Colombians as part of a larger mix of nationalities.

Recent federal data show Colombians are among the largest nationalities crossing the Mexican border into the U.S. since October 2018. About 4.5 million migrants were released in the U.S. after crossing the Mexican border during this period. Migrants are reported to be from 174 countries, with Colombia's citizens accounting for significant numbers, particularly in Colorado, New York City's Queens, and Florida.

Women and children make up nearly six in ten migrants released at the border, a significant shift from earlier periods dominated by single men. Colombia remains the leading destination for Colombian citizens, with 1,700,999 of the 11,496,405 international movements by Colombian citizens in 2025. The United States accounts for more than any other destination, followed by Spain, Panama, and Mexico.

Net departures from Colombia have increased, with 226,000 recorded in the first half of 2026, compared to 136,000 in 2025. Irregular transit of migrants has declined, with Colombian citizens down by 73% and overall detections falling by 38.7% from the same period in 2025. The Colombian government has organized 187 humanitarian flights to bring Colombian citizens back home, with the majority of these flights originating from the United States.
