War, genocide 'normalised' by world powers - President

President Catherine Connolly expressed deep concern that war and genocide are being normalized by world powers, during her annual Sabhal Mór Ostaig lecture on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. The President condemned the abandonment of United Nations founding principles and highlighted the threat posed by aggressive language from great powers.

She emphasized the responsibility of free nations to use their freedom courageously to benefit society, nature, and the climate, noting the need to protect the Earth's beauty for future generations. President Connolly quoted Máire Mhór nan Órán, a Scottish poet, to stress the inevitability of truth prevailing over wickedness. The President also warned that the repeated use of threatening messages by powerful nations has led to destruction, injury, and fear worldwide.

She emphasized the manipulation of language as a tool of power and the misrepresentation that often ensues. The Sabhal Mór Ostaig lecture, a prestigious event in Scottish culture, sees President Connolly delivering remarks entirely in Gaelic, a language that she praised for its preservation efforts. Currently under threat due to demand for holiday homes, the Gaelic language is facing challenges on Skye, similar to other Gaeltacht regions in Ireland.

However, the college of Sabhal Mór Ostaig has built 18 affordable houses to support language growth and development, providing locals with opportunities to make a living through Gaelic.
