Viral performance video sparks calls for legal action over alleged insults to Rukun Negara

Malaysian National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang has called for a probe into allegations of insulting the Malay Rulers and the Rukun Negara in a viral stage performance video. According to the minister, appropriate legal action should be taken if the performance is found to violate laws such as the Penal Code, Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and Sedition Act 1948.

The Rukun Negara, a national ideology and guide for unity, was established on August 31, 1970. Aaron described the performance as irresponsible and unacceptable, emphasizing that freedom of expression should not be used to belittle national institutions or undermine social harmony.

Dr Zulkifli Hasan, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department for Religious Affairs, also condemned the video, stating it breached proper conduct and social norms. He urged the organisers to apologize publicly, while authorities must conduct a thorough investigation and take strong legal action against anyone who insulted the country's foundations.

Aaron and Hasan emphasized that artistic platforms should uplift the nation, not divide it, and stressed the importance of upholding moral values, truth, and strong religious values in shaping Malaysia's future.
