UK court jails carer on student visa 12 years for raping bedbound woman

A Pakistani care worker with a student visa, Fazli Qadeer, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison in Bristol, UK, for raping an elderly bedridden woman. The 25-year-old, originally from Peshawar, followed his brother to the city to study and took up a caretaking job. Bristol Crown Court heard that Qadeer entered the woman's home while the family was away, climbed onto her bed, and engaged in a sustained sexual assault, including kissing and oral rape.

Qadeer denied the rape, claiming the victim had assaulted him instead. Despite his defense, he was found guilty and sentenced. His barrister presented a letter of apology and mentioned Qadeer's difficult upbringing and a history of childhood rape, suggesting cultural misunderstandings. However, the judge emphasized Qadeer's previous good character but deemed his motive unclear.

A victim impact statement revealed severe trauma, including nightmares and fear of the attacker. The woman now suffers from anxiety and requires diazepam for stress. Qadeer faces a restraining order and a review of his immigration status post-sentence.
