U.S. strikes Greenland deal to end row that threatened NATO

Governor Gavin Newsom of California has signed a series of election security bills in an effort to prevent federal interference and ensure the integrity of the voting process, according to a statement released on Sunday. The legislation targets various aspects of election security, including extending the hours for mail-in voting drop-off locations and imposing felony charges for the seizure of ballots or election records.

This particular bill is likely a direct response to Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, who recently took possession of over 650,000 ballots from a 2025 redistricting special election.

One of the key provisions in the bill package is a safeguard against the Trump administration's efforts to restrict vote-by-mail, which it claims is plagued with fraud. However, the U.S. Supreme Court recently blocked the administration's proposed changes to vote-by-mail, including a mandate for states to submit lists of approved voters for mail ballots to the U.S. Postal Service.

Newsom emphasized the importance of protecting the right to vote from interference during his statement, stating that California will take every opportunity to fight against efforts to manipulate the electoral process. He called for the future of democracy to be protected against threats both domestic and foreign.

Another aspect of the legislation addresses the role of political campaigns in their interactions with social media influencers. It imposes penalties on individuals who fail to disclose paid political content, following criticism of the recent gubernatorial race, where contender and billionaire philanthropist Tom Steyer faced accusations of paying content creators to promote him without proper disclosure, raising concerns about the potential for campaign financing through social media.
