The human hands that keep this iconic clock ticking

In Kuala Lumpur, three men have been entrusted with the task of keeping the iconic clock at the Sultan Abdul Samad Building ticking for 129 years. This clock has become a familiar witness to the city’s history, accompanying generations of Malaysians through both ordinary and momentous moments. The task of maintaining this century-old mechanism falls to Muhammad Kamarul Azman, L Kumarasamy, and Roshdihisham Hassan, all from the survey and mapping department.

Every evening, after their office hours, the trio make their way to the narrow, sweltering tower to wind the clock and ensure its accuracy. Kamarul explained to FMT that the task requires patience, as the crank cannot be turned too quickly, as it could disrupt the pulley system. Their physical strength is relied upon to complete this delicate task.

Occasionally, the responsibility extends beyond their regular checks. One such instance involved Kamarul returning home when he received a call from the building management informing him that the clock had stopped. In this case, the three men had to return to the building at midnight to inspect and repair the issue.

The clock's role takes on added significance during the Merdeka celebrations, when crowds gather outside and the countdown begins. As the men stay inside the tower, they watch closely to ensure the clock strikes precisely at midnight. Kamarul expressed his pride in knowing that his hands contribute to the clock's familiar chime as thousands celebrate below.

For Kamarul, the role began almost by chance. A senior colleague introduced him to the clock's century-old machinery, sparking a fascination he had not expected. "When you watch all the gears and machinery moving, you become very interested in learning how it all works. That is what has kept us here until today," Kamarul shared.

Much of their knowledge has been passed down through experience and from those who cared for the clock before them. Despite the lack of a handbook, their expertise ensures the mechanism continues to function properly. The clock in this iconic building will continue to tick, not only because of the intricate machinery within it but also because of the dedication of the men who keep watch over it.
