Reveal all of Najib’s house arrest terms, urges Bersatu

Bersatu, the Malaysian opposition party, has called on the government to disclose all the conditions of house arrest imposed on former Prime Minister Najib Razak following his conditional pardon in the SRC International case. The party's secretary-general, Azmin Ali, stated that revealing these details would alleviate public anger and unrest that may arise due to concerns over the decision.

Ali emphasized the importance of transparency in explaining the legal framework, procedures, and criteria that govern house arrests, as well as whether similar privileges could be granted to other inmates. He reiterated that Bersatu believes those convicted of corruption should be punished in accordance with the law and the provisions of the Federal Constitution.

However, Bersatu contended that the constitutional right of pardon held by the king should not result in unequal treatment based on an individual's position, influence, or background.

The government's announcement revealed that Najib will serve the remaining six years of his jail sentence at his residence, provided he fulfills the RM50 million fine imposed in his SRC International case. The king granted this conditional pardon in a Federal Territories Pardons Board meeting. Najib, aged 73, was initially serving a 12-year sentence, which the board reduced to six years in February 2024. The fine was also reduced from RM210 million to RM50 million.
