APC, NDC Clash: Delta Orders Probe, Prosecution of Culprits

The Delta State Government has ordered security forces to investigate a violent clash between suspected All Progressives Congress (APC) and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area. Anyone found guilty will face prosecution. The incident reportedly took place during an NDC campaign march in Effurun.

An NDC leader accused the APC and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of orchestrating the attack. The government expressed concern over a viral video showing the confrontation and warned that political rivalry should not escalate into violence, intimidation or thuggery. State Commissioner for Works and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, reported that Governor Oborevwori directed the thorough investigation of the incident.

He emphasized that every political party, candidate and supporter has the right to campaign freely and peacefully in the state without harassment or obstruction. Aniagwu stated that the government maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards political violence, regardless of the party or individuals involved. He reiterated that political campaigns do not justify violence and that political disagreements should not endanger communities or residents' safety.

The commissioner urged supporters of both ruling and opposition parties to comply with the law, stressing that political competition should not turn into a battle for physical supremacy. He clarified that political affiliation cannot exempt anyone from prosecution if they violate the law. Aniagwu called on political leaders, candidates, youth and community leaders to prevent their supporters from engaging in violent behavior and ensure that campaign activities remain peaceful.
