Bersatu wants clarity on Najib's house arrest implementation

KUALA LUMPUR: The opposition party Bersatu is seeking greater clarity from the government regarding the implementation of house arrest for former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, the secretary-general of Bersatu, has urged the government to disclose the legal framework, procedures and criteria that will be utilized when applying house arrest to individuals. He also emphasized that the same privileges should be transparently applied to other prisoners who meet the necessary criteria.

Azmin Ali argued that it is essential to maintain transparency in the implementation of the Pardons Board's decision. He called for all conditions imposed on Najib, including serving the remainder of his sentence under house arrest, to be clearly explained and announced to the public. This transparency is crucial to prevent the perception of unequal treatment between the influential and ordinary citizens, reducing public unease and safeguarding the integrity of the judiciary and public confidence in the legal and integrity systems.

It was reported recently that Najib was granted house arrest for the duration of his sentence, contingent upon fulfilling the RM50 million fine imposed due to his conviction in the SRC International case. According to a statement from the Federal Territories Pardons Board, Najib is required to adhere to all imposed conditions to complete his prison sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028.
