Putin Accuses Ukraine of Sabotaging Peace Negotiations

Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of obstructing peace negotiations, alleging that Kyiv is actively hindering diplomatic resolution efforts. In a statement on Friday, Sept. 18, Putin claimed that Ukrainian officials are disingenuous in their calls for dialogue, stating that they are "committing such crimes" by preventing peace and negotiations.

He emphasized that Moscow cannot be intimidated and cited recent Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian defense-industrial and refining facilities as proof of their unwillingness to negotiate. Ukrainian officials, however, have repeatedly proposed diplomatic initiatives, including an unconditional ceasefire and direct leader-level talks, while Moscow has demanded extensive political concessions, such as international recognition of its annexations and the cession of control over Donbas regions, before engaging in dialogue.

This stance contrasts with President Volodymyr Zelensky's warnings that Putin remains committed to dismantling Ukraine's sovereignty rather than resolving a territorial dispute. Zelensky emphasized that Putin desires Ukraine's inclusion within Russia and that Kyiv remains prepared for an unconditional cessation of hostilities if Moscow stops combat operations along the current line of contact.

He dismissed the notion of a "win-win" compromise, arguing that a war that has caused hundreds of thousands of deaths cannot be mutually beneficial. The diplomatic stalemate comes amid reports that the Trump administration is considering preliminary commercial agreements with Russia before reaching a definitive peace settlement, potentially in an attempt to persuade hardline figures in Putin's circle of the US's commitment to a constructive bilateral framework.
