PM Anwar vows to strengthen pondok schools, introduce AI and modern fields

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced his government's commitment to enhance pondok schools, infusing them with modern facilities, academic subjects, and updated fields of study. In his speech during the National Turath Scholars' Consultation at the start of Malaysia's Islamic Turath Festival 2026, Anwar highlighted the government's unique stance, stating that for the first time, assistance to these institutions has been initiated.

He acknowledged that since independence in 1957, various governments have come and gone, but this was the first time the nation had taken such decisive action.

Anwar emphasized that although he would not determine the curriculum, he would focus on elevating the pondok institutions' dignity and position through new disciplines and knowledge. He proposed incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) as a vital tool for Islamic outreach and community development. However, Anwar cautioned that AI's unchecked use could pose risks and threats if not underpinned by ethical and moral principles. He urged children in pondok institutions to receive AI training.

The Prime Minister also stressed that pondok institutions should cater to diverse educational pathways, recognizing that not all students need to become religious scholars. Some might pursue engineering, become pilots, or enter technical and vocational education and training (TVET), all while maintaining a religious foundation. Further, Anwar advocated for pathways to universities, enabling pondok graduates to contribute to the broader public education system.
