Harrods seeks to recover abuse compensation costs from Mohamed Al Fayed’s estate

Survivors of alleged sexual abuse by Mohamed Al Fayed at Harrods are criticizing the luxury retailer's attempt to recoup compensation costs from the late billionaire's estate. Harrods seeks full indemnity from Fayed's estate for any settlements it must pay, according to sources. Survivors' representatives say this plan is at odds with Harrods' public acceptance of responsibility for the abuse.

Lucy Traynor, a senior associate at KP Law representing many survivors, stated that Harrods publicly accepts responsibility for the abuse but intends to seek a full indemnity from the estate if successful. Traynor emphasized that Harrods' plan contradicts its statements and raises questions about the role of others within the organization and whether institutional structures facilitated or prevented Fayed's conduct.

Harrods has already acknowledged "vicarious liability" for the sexual abuse and condemned it. Compensation claims against Harrods and the estate by 275 of the known survivors could reach up to £150m, according to KP Law. In 2023, Harrods paid £4.1m out of its £57m compensation fund, settling claims with 113 women. The store opened an investigation into whether its current staff were involved in the alleged abuse, but the matter remains unresolved.

Harrods' decision to appoint special executors to handle Fayed's estate has been met with criticism from survivors who feel the compensation costs should not be fully recoverable from the estate.
