Nobel laureate says Iran’s repression of society has increased since the war began, but ‘a wave of resistance among the people’ is rising up

Iran's most revered human rights advocate, Narges Mohammadi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has revealed that the nation is enduring a profound economic and social crisis in the wake of a one-and-a-half-year-long conflict. The renowned activist, who was granted temporary release from prison for medical reasons, expressed her growing concern over the severe repression that has gripped Iranian society.

In an interview conducted outside Iran, Mohammadi shared that the oppressive regime has increased its crackdown on protests and dissent, leaving little room for the populace to breathe. Despite the grim situation, she noted that a wave of resistance among the people is rising, fueled by a new generation who are aware of their rights and are standing firm.

Mohammadi's memoir, "A Woman Never Stops Fighting," which she wrote while in prison, details her experiences under the current regime and the struggles of her fellow citizens. The English and Farsi editions of her book are set to be released this September, coinciding with the anniversary of Mahsa Amini's death, a 22-year-old woman who died after being detained for allegedly violating Iran's strict Islamic dress code.

Her release from prison was temporary, as she was later arrested and sentenced to 16 years and 100 lashes for attending a memorial ceremony for a fellow human rights activist. Mohammadi's ordeal has left her in a life-threatening condition, having been severely beaten while in custody and subjected to solitary confinement. Despite the harsh treatment, she remains determined to continue her fight for human rights and the dignity of the Iranian people.
